Abstract

Assertiveness is a critical communication skill in nursing, influencing patient care, teamwork, and professional advocacy. This concept analysis explores assertiveness within the nursing profession using Walker and Avant’s eight-step method. The defining attributes of assertiveness include confidence, respect, self-expression, and boundary-setting. Antecedents such as self-awareness, professional training, and workplace culture play a significant role in developing assertive behaviors, while consequences include improved nurse-patient relationships, reduced workplace stress, and enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration. The analysis differentiates assertiveness from related concepts such as aggression, passivity, and submissiveness. Model, borderline, and contrary cases illustrate its practical application in nursing settings. By clarifying the meaning and significance of assertiveness, this study provides a foundation for nursing education and practice, emphasizing the need for assertiveness training to foster effective communication and leadership in healthcare.
